Text Box: “After years of suffering through aggressive yoga classes and their painful aftermath, I discovered Svaroopa® Yoga as taught by Joanne. What a delight! In her classes, I have found all the benefits that I have looked for in yoga – increased flexibility, reduction of back pain, stress relief – without the pain and unpleasant-ness of twisting myself into pretzel shapes to achieve them. It almost seems like cheating! I reap all those benefits and actually look forward to class with great anticipation. No pain – lots of gain! What is not to love!”

Text Box: “Joanne’s class helped my back pain. Instead of taking six pills each day, I only take one. At first I thought folding the blankets was a hassle and that the class was too slow. I wanted to do yoga poses, as many as you could fit into the session. I had been used to other types of yoga classes in which I tried to force my body into the poses, which resulted in more tension in my body and a sense of failure in not being able to execute the poses properly. With Svaroopa® Yoga, the support from the blankets lets me soften into the pose. After all these years, I am finally ‘getting it’, being able to feel the release, relax into that moment when you can let go”.

ABOUT THIS STYLE OF HATHA YOGA

Body Bliss teaches a style of yoga called Svaroopa® Yoga (“svah-roo-pah”), often referred to as “bliss yoga”. Svaroopa® Yoga works with the body in a radically different way from other forms of yoga and exercise. It uses precise alignments, props and hands-on adjustments to reach into the deepest layers of spinal muscles to unravel and release tension. When those tight spinal muscles relax a domino effect of release begins working it’s way throughout the whole body. This release at the core allows other areas to release in turn, so the results are felt not only in the whole body, but also in the mind and spirit, bringing profound healing, centeredness and serenity.

What is different about Svaroopa® Yoga is the basic premise that the body releases most readily when it is physically supported, just as we relax and are most open when we feel emotionally supported. Therefore, props like thick blankets and chairs are often used to provide ease in the postures.

What is most different about Svaroopa® Yoga is the results, letting go of what is not you, the contractions in body, mind and spirit, so that you live the truth of who you are!
